AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION: RHETORICAL ANALYSIS ESSAY OUTLINE Overview The purpose of the Rhetorical Analysis Essay is to showcase your ability to read closely and critically, to analyze author purpose, intent, and usage of rhetorical appeals, devices, and surface features, and to effectively communicate your analysis in written form.
I created it based on reading too many rhetorical analysis essays for AP Lang, and question 1 and 2 essays for AP Lit. (I teach both and those prompts on the Lit exam are constructed the same manner as the rhetorical analysis.) All of the best papers seemed to have topic sentences that identify what an author was doing and why.
The first of three new secure AP English Language and Composition practice exams is now available on the AP Course Audit site and in the AP Classroom question bank. The second and third will be posted later in the spring. Each practice exam matches this year’s exam specifications and includes scoring guidelines and a scoring worksheet.
